Thesis Statement For Romeo And Juliet Essay - 776 Words

Romeo and Juliet , written by Shakespeare, is a novel about two teenagers, Romeo and Juliet, who came from feuding families and fell in love against their parents’ wishes. The adolescents belong to the Capulets and the Montagues which are the two rival families in Verona. In the novel during Act 3 scene 1, Mercutio, who is Romeo’s friend, got in a brawl with Tybalt, Juliet’s cousin. The result of the fight left Mercutio dead and Tybalt considered a murderer. Mercutio’s last words before his death were â€Å"A plague a’ both your houses!† (3.1.88.) Both families, the Capulets and the Montagues were at fault for the death of Mercutio. {{The last sentence of the introduction should address the prompt directly, this is your thesis statement.†¦show more content†¦Mercutio, who was a strong believer that no man should back down from a fight and shouldn’t tolerate insults, fought with Tybalt instead of Romeo, getting killed in the end. Another reason why the Capulets were at fault, is that Tybalt entered the scene of the argument full of pride, anger and arrogance. He approached the other men, saying to his followers, â€Å"Follow me close, for I will speak to them† (3.1.34.) This quote displays how he told his entourage to look up to him and listen closely as he speaks, as if he were the president, and they were the news reporters. Tybalt then proceeded to mock Romeo and made it seem that he is above and better than all of the Montagues. Tybalt tried to start a fight with a Romeo, but ended up fighting Mercutio and killing him instead. Even though Tybalt, who came from the Capulets, was the one who killed Mercutio, both families were responsible for the death. Mercutio’s last words portray that his death was Romeo’s fault, as much as Tybalt’s fault, for closing the gap between the two rival families. In Act 3 Scene 1, Tybalt called Romeo a villain, â€Å"No better term than this: thou art a villain† (3.1.57.) Structural-Functionalist and Social Conflict The study of social stratification is the study of class, caste, privilege, and status that is a characteristic of a particular society. It often varies according to how society is organized especially in terms of production and work. The definition of social stratification is differential ranking of human individuals who compose a given social system and their treatment as superior or inferior relative to one another in certain socially important respects (Parsons, Analytical Approach to Social Strat,69). The structural-functionalist theorist, believe that society can be subdivided into its various parts: economy, ecology, religion, sexuality, and so on and then be analyzed from the different sections listed. Social inequality plays an important role in the running of our society. This influential and controversial argument was set forth some fifty years ago by Kingsley Davis and Wilbert Moore(1945) (Macionis,245). The structural-functionalist, believe that a society that has unequal rewards will operate more smoothly and make people want to strive to do better things with their lives. A person who washes cars for a living compared to a lawyer, says that one worked harder to get where they are, and the lawyer receives more pats on the back than the car washer ever will. We live in a society in which you must work for everything you get. Some have more ambition than others, which makes our world run the way it does. Social-conflict theorists on the other hand see the social stratification term from a whole other perspective. They say that rather than helping the society as a whole, the social stratification only benefits certain groups while taking away from the left over amounts. The productive system has brought great disparities in our productive system. Karl Marx also thought that misery would drive the working majority to organize and ultimately overthrow capitalism. Erving Goffman's Front Stage and Back Stage Behavior In sociology, the terms front stage and back stage refer to different behaviors that people engage in every day. Developed by the late sociologist Erving Goffman, they form part of the dramaturgical perspective within sociology that uses the metaphor of the theater to explain social interaction. The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life Erving Goffman presented the dramaturgical perspective in the 1959 book The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life. In it, Goffman uses the metaphor of theatrical production to offer a way of understanding human interaction and behavior. He argues that social life is a performance carried out by teams of participants in three places: front stage, back stage, and off stage. The dramaturgical perspective also emphasizes the importance of the setting, or context, in shaping the performance, the role of a persons appearance in social interaction, and the effect the manner of a persons behavior has on the overall performance. Running through this perspective is a recognition that social interaction is influenced by the time and place in which it occurs as well as by the audience present to witness it. It is also determined by the values, norms, beliefs, and common cultural practices of the social group or the locale where it occurs. Front Stage Behavior- the World Is a Stage The idea that people play different roles throughout their daily lives and display different kinds of behavior depending on where they are and the time of day is a familiar one. Most people, consciously or unconsciously, behave somewhat differently as their professional selves vs. their private or intimate selves. According to Goffman, people engage in front stage behavior when they know that others are watching. Front stage behavior reflects internalized norms and expectations for behavior shaped partly by the  setting, the particular role one plays in it, and by ones physical appearance. How people participate in a front stage performance can be highly intentional and purposeful, or it can be habitual or subconscious. Either way, front stage behavior typically follows a routinized and learned social script shaped by cultural norms. Waiting in line for something, boarding a bus and flashing a transit pass, and  exchanging pleasantries about the weekend with colleagues are all examples of highly routinized and scripted front-stage performances. The routines of peoples daily lives- traveling to and from work, shopping, dining out, or going to a cultural exhibit or performance- all fall into the category of front stage behavior. The performances people put on with those around them follow familiar rules and expectations for what they should do and talk about with one another in each setting. People also engage in front stage behavior in less public places such as among colleagues at work and as students in classrooms. Whatever the setting of front stage behavior, people are aware of how others perceive them and what they expect, and this knowledge tells them how to behave. It shapes not just what individuals do and say in social settings but how they dress and style themselves, the consumer items they carry around, and the manner of their behavior (assertive, demure, pleasant, hostile, etc.) These, in turn, shape how others view them, what they expect of them, and how they behave toward them. Put differently, French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu would say that cultural capital is a significant factor both in shaping front stage behavior and how others interpret the meaning of it. Back Stage Behavior- What We Do When No Ones Looking When people engage in back stage behavior, they are free of the expectations and norms that dictate front stage behavior. Given this, people are often more relaxed and comfortable when  back stage; they let their guard down and behave in ways that reflect their uninhibited or true selves. They cast off elements of their appearance required for a front stage performance, such as swapping work clothes for casual clothes and loungewear. They may even change how they speak and comport their bodies or carry themselves. When people are back stage, they often rehearse certain behaviors or interactions and otherwise prepare for upcoming front stage performances. They might practice their smile or handshake, rehearse a presentation or conversation, or prep themselves to look a certain way once in public again. So even back stage, people are aware of norms and expectations, which influence what they think about and do. In private, people behave in ways that they would never in public. However, even peoples back stage lives tend to involve others, such as housemates, partners, and family members. One may not behave as formally with these individuals than standard front stage behavior dictates, but they may not fully let down their guards either. Peoples back stage behavior mirrors the way actors behave in the back stage of a theater, the kitchen within a restaurant, or the employee only areas of retail shops. For the most part, how one behaves front stage significantly differs from an individuals back stage conduct. When someone ignores the expectations for front and back stage behaviors, it may lead to confusion, embarrassment, and even controversy. Imagine if a high school principal showed up to school in her bathrobe and slippers, for example, or used profanity while speaking with colleagues and students. While reading The Road, a novel written by Cormac McCarthy, I was jerked from the warmth, comfort, and safety of my home and thrown into a cold, dark, and desolate world, walking alongside â€Å"the man† and â€Å"the boy†. McCarthy composes his work so graphically that readers are drawn right into the story. I believe Cormac McCarthy wanted the figures in this book to be universal, so that the reader could imagine him/her self as â€Å"the boy† or â€Å"the man† at any given moment, and to be able to feel as they do. To do this McCarthy did not designate the characters in his book with names, and because of this, I was able to connect with â€Å"the man† and â€Å"the boy† on a personal level and envision myself uniting with them in their chilling journey. As the reader, I was deeply overwhelmed with many mixed emotions such as compassion, sadness, happiness, disgust, remorse, and fear. I have pity for the characters in the book The Road, because â€Å"the man† and â€Å"the boy† have to pass day to day struggling to survive in a frigid bleak world where food is scarce â€Å"They squatted in the road and ate rice and cold beans they’d cooked days ago.† â€Å"Already beginning to ferment.†(McCarthy 29). When the boy’s mother takes her own life, I was deeply saddened and my heart broke for â€Å"the boy† simply because his mom, someone he cherished and loved so much, had given up on hope and faith and deserted him. I just wan... ..., I jumped in the bed got as close to my husband as possible and eventually drifted off to sleep. When I finished reading The Road by Cormac McCarthy, I was astonished at how deep I was able to connect with the characters and the fact that this book touched me as deeply as it did. It also made me think what if†¦? In reality if this were to happen would I have the courage and strength of â€Å"the man† and â€Å"the boy† or would I be like the mother as McCarthy states it â€Å" †¦a faithless slut†¦Ã¢â‚¬  (57), who has taken death as a new lover. Over all I personally believe that this novel was absolutely fantastic, even though I had nightmares for a few nights after I had completed the book. This just goes to show what a great writer McCarthy is, he touches his readers so deeply they even dream about his work. I would defiantly pick up this book and read it again just for fun.

If they are well trained it reflects well on their falconer (tamer) this animal imagery of Kat describes her very well and how if she is well trained it reflects well on Petrucio. Petrucio gives trust and loyalty a reward. He looks for the respect and when Kat is good he gives her freedom. He takes things away from her, which she needs to survive. Kat gives a large speech and begs to Grumio for something to eat. She doesnt want to walk out and cant give in. She has strong stamina and inner strength. Kat wants to conform and wants to be like other women. Petrucio doesnt let her do it because he doesnt see her tamed. This is shown when he says, When you are gentle, you shall have one too . Petrucio takes Kat to his mothers house to conform. Petrucio is trying to make her something in time and because of the treatment she has received she gives in. Kat though pretends and plays the game to get her own way. You can tell this by her sarcastic over the top language she uses. Kat is seen as strong as it took long tom tame her, which appeals to the female audience. The big question though is if she is silenced or has she transformed, but for her to be transformed this would be too hard a possibility but there is no real answer. The audience therefore has to make their own mind up. Kat uses hyperbolic language as she has been with Petrucio for a long time and she sounds like him because he uses hyperbolic language.
